Botox® had been available as a therapeutic agent since the late 1960s to treat neurological disorders. Today, we use Botox® to treat wrinkles in the face and neck. Botox® can be used to smooth lines in the forehead, between the eyebrows (“glabella”), around the eyes (“crows’ feet”), around the nose (“bunny lines” and nostril flaring), around the lips (“smoker’s lines”), and in the neck. In fact, Botox® can be used for many lines that are caused by muscle movement. Botox® can also be used to shape the eyebrows: a “Botox® Browlift”.
Dysport® is the FDA-approved wrinkle treatment now rivaling Botox®. Dysport®
works very much like Botox®, keeping those muscles from making facial and neck lines deeper. Here's the scoop on Dysport®:
And Xeomin® is the latest addition to the US market for treating the same lines that Botox® and Dysport® can treat. Here's the skinny on Xeomin®:
We will discuss with you which lines you’d like to see improved, then we will let you know if Botox®, Dysport®, Xeomin® (or some other treatment) is appropriate for you. The quick procedure can be done on the same day as your initial consultation. Dr. Kavali or one of her Physician Assistants (Maggie or Alicia) will perform your Botox® or Dysport® or Xeomin® treatment. Maggie and Alicia both have a wealth of experience with these products—they even do Dr. Kavali’s own Botox® and Dysport® and Xeomin® treatments! You will know prior to your appointment which provider will be available for your treatment.
Botox® and Dysport® and Xeomin® treatments have no downtime; you can immediately resume your normal activities. Within about a week, you will notice that the treated areas have less movement. The lines in the skin may take up to one month to completely relax. We like to have you come back 2 weeks after your first treatment, so we can fine-tune any areas that may need more units of Botox® or Dysport® or Xeomin® for full effect.
We measure Botox® and Dysport® and Xeomin® in “units”. The amount needed depends greatly on how thick your muscles are, how deep your lines are, how many prior Botox® or Dysport® or Xeomin® treatments you’ve had, and what type of results you’re seeking. Typically, it takes around 30-40 units of Botox® to treat the forehead, 20-25 units of Botox® to treat the glabella, and 15-20 units of Botox® to treat crows’ feet.
Dysport® "units" and Botox® "units" are NOT the same. You'll need more Dysport® units to get a full result. The good news is that Dysport® is less costly than Botox®, so you'll still save on your treatments!
Xeomin® "units" are comparable to Botox® "units", so you should expect to need 30-40 units of Xeomin® to treat your forehead, 20-25 units for the glabella (the 11s), and 15-20 units of Xeomin® to treat the crows' feet.
Botox® injections are a temporary solution for the treatment of wrinkles. The effects typically last about 3-4 months. Dysport® results last at least as long as Botox® results, and some studies suggest Dysport® lasts even longer. Xeomin® results should last 3-4 months.
Serious side effects are very rare. You may have some local numbness, temporary swelling, bruising, or a slight burning sensation during your treatment. Some people have reported temporary headache and nausea. Very rarely, a patient is reported to experience no wrinkle improvement at all.
