Male Breast Procedures

Many men have enlarged breasts, called “gynecomastia”. In fact, up to 40% of males may have some degree of breast enlargement. So the first thing to know is that you’re not alone.

Although certain drugs and medical problems may cause or contribute to male breast enlargement, it is likely that a large percentage of cases come from unknown sources.

If you are bothered by the size of your breasts, you may consider male breast reduction surgery to reduce the size of the breasts and give you a more masculine chest shape.

After you arrive at our office, you’ll first meet with one of Dr. Kavali’s Physician Assistants. They will begin the consultation process by reviewing your medical history, establishing your goals for the surgery, and by taking relevant photographs for your medical record.

Dr. Kavali will complete the consultation process by meeting with you to personally hear about your goals for surgery. This conversation will help Dr. Kavali understand your expectations and determine whether they can realistically be met.

Dr. Kavali will examine your chest and breasts, then discuss which surgical options might work best for you.

The consultation time is meant to be comfortable and educational. We want you to feel completely informed, so you can make your own personal best decision.

How is Male Breast Reduction done?

Dr. Kavali uses liposuction or a combination of liposuction and cutting out the extra breast tissue. Liposuction scars are tiny incisions placed in the breast crease. If tissue needs to be cut out, a small semicircular scar is placed in the margin of the areola. Laser-assisted liposuction is very useful in treating gynecomastia, and Dr. Kavali will discuss this option with you during your consultation.

The results of male breast reduction are permanent, unless you have significant weight gain, which can cause the breasts to appear larger. You can expect to have a firmer, flatter, more contoured chest.

What is the Typical Recovery Like?

Most men return to work in one week or less, unless strenuous activities are involved. You should expect some postoperative bruising, swelling, and occasional burning sensations. Numbness or lack of sensation could last up to a year. More rare complications include infection, skin damage, fluid accumulation, bleeding, scarring or pigment changes. Postoperative asymmetry, while rare, is possible; a second procedure may be needed to remove additional tissue. You will need to wear an elastic pressure garment for 3-6 weeks.
