What Is a Brazilian Butt Lift?
A Brazilian butt lift, also called a BBL or a fat transfer to the buttocks, is a gluteal-augmentation procedure that uses your own fatty tissue to add appealing volume to your rear end. This procedure can get rid of hip dips and make a flat rear end look curvy and feel firm. It can also improve your overall proportions and help certain types of clothing fit better.
This two-in-one surgery gives your butt a rounder, curvier shape while also contouring away excess stubborn fat from trouble areas. Surgeons utilize liposuction to remove excess fat cells from spots like the abdomen, thighs, hips, and upper arms. Patients can get rid of their saddlebags, love handles, or muffin top and put that unwanted fatty tissue to good use.
Because your own fat is used during a BBL, this body-sculpting surgery is considered to be an autologous procedure. The donor material comes from the patient’s body, and because of this, the likelihood of rejection by the body is incredibly low, as is the chance of allergic reactions.

The surgeon will perform a thorough physical exam and go into detail about the BBL process from start to finish, including preparation instructions, recovery, and the patient’s potential results.
The BBL Procedure: What to Expect
The Brazilian buttock lift procedure is a process that involves three steps: liposuction, fatty tissue purification, and fat-cell injection into the buttocks. The surgery can take as little as an hour or as long as four hours; the size and number of regions being contoured with liposuction can affect the overall length of the procedure.
The fat injection process in particular can be quite time-consuming. It’s best to be patient with this step of the treatment, since it requires a great deal of precision. Fat cells must be injected into very specific areas of the buttocks in order to connect with the blood supply properly and thrive in their new location. When this process is done well, it leads to the highest-quality longest-lasting results.
Step 1: Liposuction
At the start of a Brazilian butt lift, the areas targeted for liposuction will be marked. Anesthesia will be administered to prevent pain and ensure patient comfort throughout the procedure.
Once the anesthesia has taken effect, the surgeon will perform liposuction to gently harvest fat cells for transfer. This begins with administration of tumescent fluid, since our surgeons typically prefer tumescent liposuction.
Tumescent fluid is made up of lidocaine for local numbing, epinephrine, and normal saline. This fluid causes fat cells to become tumescent (swollen) for easier removal and minimizes the chance of bleeding during surgery.
After the fluid has been administered, the surgeon will make a tiny incision in the natural contours of the targeted area, helping to hide any post-surgical marks. She will carefully insert a tiny tool called a cannula, which is a thin tube with a sharp end. She will use the sharp end to dislodge stubborn fat cells, which she will then suction out of the body utilizing medical suction.
The surgeon will repeat this process for all areas targeted for liposuction. She will need to gather more than enough fat to fill the buttocks; precise overfilling is necessary in order to compensate for the fat cells that do not survive after the BBL.
She must harvest the fat cells very carefully and gently, since preserving their health is vital. Damaged fat cells are often not viable for transfer, because they have a much lower chance of survival afterwards.
Step 2: Fat-Cell Processing
Step 2 is processing, or purifying, the harvested fat cells. Liposuction removes healthy fat cells, but it also takes out dead and damaged fat cells, along with small amounts of oil, blood, free lipids, and debris. If these were to be transferred, they could result in health issues like infections, tissue inflammation, and oil cysts. They can also cause fat cells to die and can result in depressions in the surface of the buttocks.
Because of these potential issues, the surgeon will remove these substances through a purification process, leaving only healthy fat cells. Purification can be achieved through several methods, including centrifugation and washing/filtering.
During centrifugation, the fatty tissue is placed in a centrifuge and then spun and high speeds, separating the fat cells from the other substances. During washing/filtering, the tissue is filtered through cotton gauze or washed with saline.
Step 3: Fat Transfer
Once fat-cell purification has been completed, the surgeon will load the fat cells into a specialized cannula for injection into the buttocks. Local anesthesia will be administered into areas of the buttocks, preventing pain.
The surgeon will make small incisions, which will be well hidden to prevent noticeable post-surgical marks. These can be created in a number of areas, including near the top of the buttocks, between the cheeks, and below the crease where the thigh connects to the buttock.
Next, the surgeon will carefully inject fat cells into the incisions, depositing them at various depths. This results in even and precise creation of new volume in the buttocks. Surgeons can achieve a fat-cell survival rate of anywhere from 65 to 85 percent.
Healing After Your Brazilian Butt Lift
After your BBL procedure, a friend or family member will drive you home. You’ll need to get lots of rest at the start of recovery. Brazilian butt lift recovery involves a degree of swelling and bruising in the treated areas. Wearing a compression garment will reduce swelling while also helping the skin conform to the area’s new curves. Ice packs can also be used to address bruising and swelling.
It’s vital to be extremely gentle with your buttocks during the healing process. Sleep on your side or your stomach, and use a specialized pillow as directed whenever sitting. You’ll need to stay home from work for around two weeks, and it’ll be necessary to avoid physically strenuous activities like sports for a time.
During BBL recovery, you’ll come in for regular follow-ups at our Atlanta facility, located near the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library and Museum, the Sweet Auburn Historic District, Ponce City Market, and the Fox Theatre. These follow-ups will serve as an opportunity for your surgeon to evaluate your healing process and clear you to resume certain activities.
How Much Does a BBL Cost in Atlanta?
The cost of a Brazilian butt lift in Atlanta and Sandy Springs varies from patient to patient, since a BBL is never a one-size-fits-all procedure. The price of the surgery can be impacted by factors like anesthesia fees, the specific techniques utilized, and the amount of fat removed and transferred. Additionally, the total time it takes to perform the BBL can affect the price, as can the number of areas contoured with liposuction.
To ensure that this procedure is affordable for our patients, Brazilian buttock lift financing is available through Alphaeon Credit and CareCredit. These popular medical financing companies provide various flexible payment plans. Contact us to find out more.

Brazilian Butt Lift FAQ
Which should I choose: a BBL, butt implants, or a butt lift?
To choose between a BBL, butt implants, and a butt lift, you’ll need to learn more about each procedure. Most patients don’t have a thorough understanding of the differences between these buttocks-enhancement options.
A BBL uses liposuction to harvest fat cells, which are purified and then injected into the backside. It improves the rear end’s curves and volume while also offering body-contouring benefits. It requires the patient to have excess fatty tissue in other areas, and it cannot address drooping excess skin.
Butt implants also increase volume and curve. Placing these solid silicone implants requires larger incisions and doesn’t provide the additional benefit of fat reduction. Buttocks augmentation with implants comes with a much higher likelihood of complications, and because of this, we don’t perform this procedure at Monarch Plastic Surgery and Skin Renewal Center.
The butt lift, also known as the traditional butt lift or the skin-only butt lift, does not increase buttocks volume. Instead, it specifically makes the buttocks look more toned and defined by reducing sagging. The process involves creating incisions and then trimming away excess skin using a scalpel. Our surgeons frequently perform this butt-enhancement option during lower body lifts.
Using this information, patients can decide which procedure best suits their needs and goals. The surgeons at Monarch are happy to offer advice, so please feel free to schedule a consultation.
Is a Brazilian butt lift painful?
A Brazilian butt lift is not painful. Anesthesia is administered before the procedure to numb the area, preventing any pain. Additionally, liposuction and fat injection are both considered to be minimally invasive, since the incisions required are very small.
After the procedure is complete and the anesthesia has fully worn off, there will be a degree of discomfort and soreness at the treatment sites for the first few days. Pain will gradually ameliorate after the first week of recovery.
To reduce pain, your surgeon will prescribe pain-control medication. Follow the dosage instructions as closely as possible. Additionally, avoid doing anything that could cause additional strain on the treatment areas during recovery, including sitting directly on your rear end.
How long do Brazilian butt lift results last?
Brazilian butt lift results are long-lasting. Sandy Springs patients’ buttocks will have enhanced curves and volume for many years after their BBL procedure. The body-contouring results achieved by liposuction will also be permanent, because the removed fat cells cannot return.
In order to preserve the appearance of your BBL results, maintaining a stable weight without fluctuations is highly recommended. This is because weight changes can affect the appearance of the buttocks. Weight changes may not have a major effect on the areas contoured with liposuction, but they can still affect the surrounding regions.
